July Was A Very Busy Month!
Hey sewing friends! I’m back for my end of month recap and setting intentions for August. What a month July was!
We had a holiday in the Netherlands, I traveled to the UK and back twice – but spent less than 48 hours there the first time and just 13 hours the second… I sewed, I drew and I managed to get samples for wedding invitations too.
And I did as much work as I could in between all that. Because bills need to be paid!
Disclaimer: This is a personal blog entry and you will not learn anything from reading this other than my thoughts and feelings, which will help you to know me better! 🙂
The Holiday

Let’s start with the personal stuff this month, though I’ll be brief as I did cover it in-depth in this blog post!
I felt anxious at the beginning of the month, because I suddenly realised how little time I would have for work this month, and the plans I had penciled into place wouldn’t work with such a short timeframe. At the same time I knew I was desperately in need of some time out, so a holiday was much needed.
We travelled there and back by train, used the bus and train system while there, and I succeeded in doing no work. Unless you count the two For The Weekend emails I wrote and sent, but that doesn’t take too much time now I’m in a rhythm with them.
Pssst… if you’d like to get my weekly catch up emails, join my email list via one of the ‘subscribe’ boxes you’ll see in this post!
At the end of the holiday, I felt refreshed and ready to get back to work! Win!
The Personal Projects
I had a mix of personal projects I wanted to work on throughout the month, and not all of them sewing!
The Swimsuit

I managed to sew up the Sunstar swimsuit for myself at the beginning of July! Yay! I made it from a gorgeous bring pink swim fabric I had bought last year from The New Crafthouse, and it was comfy to wear.
The only downside is that I have lost weight again (it’s a yoyo this year – yay menopause!) so the bottoms fell down very easily.
The Refashioned Top

In my summer sewing plans post I shared that I wanted to refashion a shirred top with billowy sleeves to better suit me and my style.
I succeeded in doing so, but I didn’t get to wear it on my holiday as I got too sunburned. Sigh.
I did turn the sleeves (unworn and brand new) into the most gorgeous eyelet romper for Baby M. More on that further down!
A Denim Dress
I loved the denim dress I found when sorting through some of my Mum’s bits, but it was more than a tad too long for me.
I hacked off a good amount, and hemmed it so that the length sits a couple inches above my knee and it suits me so much better!
I kept what I chopped off to make a cute denim pinafore dress for Baby M, but that’ll be a project for September I think.
Baby M Bits
I also spent some time in the middle of July creating a few bits for my great niece, known here as Baby M – which apparently her dad thinks is brilliant!
I made a sunhat and an eyelet romper, both of which are little patterns I’ve been working on. More on those further down!

Another project for Baby M was the cotton eyelet romper I made from the sleeve of my refashioned shirred top! I made the shoulder straps with elastic as she is quite tall and I wanted her to be able to get a little extra wear out of it.

Wedding Plans
I don’t think I ever properly mentioned here on the blog, but D and I got engaged in November 2023, and we’ve been chipping away at the wedding plans since, albeit slower than others have expected!
With the date confirmed for August 2026, I’ve been working on wedding invite samples, designs for my gown, fabric samples for my gown, fabric samples for the bridesmaids dresses, and so much more.
Who knew that there was so much do for a wedding? If you’d like to see more regular updates about how that’s going, let me know in the comments below. I plan to create some videos of the design and making process for my wedding outfits, but those will not be fully published until after the wedding, so that it remains a surprise for the special day.
Drawing & Painting & Other Creative Things
My final personal goal for July was to try and draw (or paint) every day. I find it very calming to practice art in this way, and really notice the difference in how I feel when I don’t.
I recommend everyone find creative outlet that they can turn to. I have several ‘creative hobbies’ that I turn to when I need something that doesn’t feel like work:
- Cooking and baking
- Drawing
- Painting
- Gardening
- Writing
- Weaving
- Knitting
- Crochet
The option I go for depends on how much time I have available, and I have found that drawing and painting are the ‘easiest’ for me in terms of picking something up for 15 minutes each day.
Some of the creative ‘non-work’ things I did in July are below!

FYI: If you like cooking I have a little foodie blog where I share the recipes I come up with, including the most delicious cookie recipe above!
The Family Time
I was so lucky to have my youngest niece and nephew come stay with us for a week! It was the very first time that my Niece had flown – and just the second time for my nephew! – and it was so wonderful to see her experience something new and exciting for the first time.

Those who have been here a while may recall that we almost lost my youngest niece in February last year after a vehicle went over her. She was a split second from having her neck snapped and the cycle helmet she had on is why she is still with us – reminder, WEAR YOUR CYCLE HELMETS!!!
I treasured the time I had with her and her older brother, but my goodness… I was exhausted by the time I returned from taking them back to the UK! It’s not that they need a lot of care… but they do like to have a lot time with me (which is great) and less time on their own. And then there’s the cooking. And the tidying up after cooking. My nephew is a growing lad and can eat for England!

Anyhow, I loved having them here, but the 25 hours travelling to and from the UK (in a 39hr period) was too much and I won’t be doing that again. Next time, I’ll break it up better.

Some of my favourite things about their visit was the amount of chess we played, that I got both of them drawing in my sketchbooks, watching England win the Women’s Euros final again, and that we ate every meal at the dining table like a family. Magic.

The Work
In July, I managed to get sixteen blog posts written or updated, which is more than I had set as a goal for the month… so yay me! I’ll list them out now, in case you missed any of them.
New on the Blog
The four new posts were:
Updated Posts In July
And then the twelve posts I managed to properly update were:
- How to use a needle threader
- Coverstitch vs Serger
- Betty Dress pattern review
- How to use non-woven interfacing
- Checkered pattern fabrics
- Trench coat deep dive (before you sew one)
- Types of socks to keep your toes cozy
- Tips for sewing with chiffon fabric
- Do you need a serger for a professional finish?
- How to thread a serger
- Easy way to gather fabric evenly
- Seam allowances in sewing
I am honestly quite chuffed. I felt bad that I ‘fell behind’ on my secret plan to update two per day, but that was never realistic with the amount of time away in July.
Some Bad News
I mentioned in a previous update that my external hard drive had been damaged and that someone was assessing it to see if there was anything that could be done.
It turns out that the issue with it is not ‘fixable’ and comes with an eye watering price tag to retrieve any data that may still exist – I’m talking thousands, not hundreds!
While I really would love to get that data back (it consists of photos and videos of my Mum who is no longer with us, other personal photos and extensive work from the last few years) it is not possible to get that kind of cash together at this point in time.
This means that all the photos and videos I worked on in 2024 (and earlier for that matter) are gone. All of the video lessons I had recorded for three new online courses (which I had planned to edit on that trip which is why the hard drive was with me) are gone. And (for now) anything on there of a personal nature, is also gone.
I have to believe that there’s a reason for it happening. I have always been so careful with technology – I only ever had one thing ‘go wrong’ before, and it was a smashed iPhone screen when helping my Mum into a vehicle – that for this to happen is astonishing to me and all who know me.
So for now, there will be fewer photos than usual in my blog posts as I need to take all new photos, and the online courses are coming, but slower than planned due to having to re-film them all. Sigh.
Emails

One of my goals has been to get back into the rhythm of sending my weekly ‘For the Weekend’ email. I notice much better engagement and conversations with my email subscribers when I stick to a schedule, so it was one of the work tasks that I stuck with even when away.
Product Development
The last thing I worked on during July was product development. As well as some patterns that are close to being completed, I also recorded quite a few lessons for my Learn to Sew course, which will be available very soon.
August Plans
As is customary, here’s a peek at my August plans. I will only have ten days in the Netherlands, due to travel plans. So I need to be more circumspect in what goals for work I set.
Personal Plans
We’ll be away with family in the UK for part of the month, which is a trip we’ve been looking forward to.
Drawing & Painting

I will take a limited set of art supplies and one sketchbook, to make sure I have a creative outlet when needed.
I’ve been enjoying drawing people so will try to sneak in some sneaky illustrations when people aren’t looking.
New Shorts
I would also like to make myself some denim shorts. I’ve been wearing my sister-in-law’s old maternity jeans which I cut down into shorts and they are so unflattering on me that I have finally decided to make a pair from scratch.
I’ll be using my own self-drafted jeans pattern, and if I have time, I’ll record it for a tutorial too, but no promises!

Linen Wrap Skirt
It’s unlikely I will actually have time for this project on top, but I would like a nice linen wrap skirt for my trip to the UK. We’ll be spending time at the beach, and I find it much easier to be there with other people when I have an easy coverup like a wrap skirt or dress.
Again, if there’s time I’ll try to record it for a video, but at the very least I’ll take photos for a new blog tutorial!
Work Plans
I am being realistic in saying that work will be tough for August. I only got back from dropping my niece and nephew off very late on the 1st August.
As I write this, it’s the 3rd and I have been pretty incoherent with sleeplessness since. And in addition to all of the above, I have no proper work space this month, as D has some research to finish up and has ‘acquired’ it before we travel.
So I will be kind with myself for August…
The Blog
I will aim to update another 12 posts. They were moved to drafts back in May or June, so I will focus on the ones that have been getting the most ‘clicks’ using my analytics data. If I don’t get all 12 done, that’s ok, but three a week should be manageable.
If possible, I will also add one new post per week. We’ll see how that goes!
Patterns
I have four patterns scanned into my laptop to work on, but they won’t all be completed this month. The first two patterns (one free, one paid) will hopefully be available at the end of the month.
I’ll have the two remaining ones ready in September.
Online Courses
I had hoped to have the Learn to Sew course fully recorded for the beginning of August, but that didn’t happen. With the limited time available, I’m going to aim to get at least one module of it recorded before we leave on our travels.
And then the pattern drafting course will have to wait until September when I have my full work space back again.
Right, that is all for this update friends! Thank you so much for making it this far, and always being such a wonderful support. I appreciate you being here more than you know!
In the meantime, have a wonderful August and I’ll see you in my emails!
Big hugs,
Eve
