5 Signs You Should Pay For A Sewing Course

Sewing beginners take note! If you have struggled with learning to sew, then this post explains the reasons why you should pay for a sewing course…

I know many people have learned to sew from watching YouTube videos or being taught by grandparents, but with generational knowledge not always being passed down, and ads all over YouTube videos (and often at key moments) spending some cash on learning to sew often does speed up the process.

Here are five signs that you should probably buy a sewing course to speed up your learning!

1. You Feel Overwhelmed By Your Sewing Machine

Your sewing machine is overwhelming you

This is the first sign that you should take a sewing course. If you look at your sewing machine, and it just feels overwhelming to you, then getting help from a sewing teacher will take away that fear and build up your confidence.

While older sewing machines used to come with just one or two stitches, the more modern sewing machines available to us can have dozens and even hundreds of stitch types… how do you know which stitches you need to become skilled at, or which are just decorative? A sewing class will help with that.

In fact, my online sewing course ‘Learn to Sew’ guides you through all you need to know about using your sewing machine in Module 2, so that when you start sewing, you feel confident in what you’re doing.

2. Learning Alone Is Slow

Learning how to sew on your own takes so long

Watching YouTube videos from home sewers will only get you so far. Yes they can feel helpful, because they were once where you are now in their sewing journey, but if you really want to get ahead with your sewing skills then learning from a professional will not only speed up your learning time, but will also teach you a variety of ways to do something.

Home sewers teaching on YouTube often use a variety of ‘hacks’ or ‘shortcuts’ in their sewing which can result in a more homemade, unfinished look. And while there’s value in being able to speed up a process, taking the time to understand and learn the correct way to do something empowers you to sew better finished projects, and use those hacks when its appropriate.

I do have some sewing tutorials on my YouTube channel which teach the professional way to do things, but inside my Learn to Sew course you get lifetime access to a library of sewing techniques that you can watch again and again, until you feel absolute confidence… and with no YouTube ads or a recurring subscription cost to access those lessons either!

3. You Struggle to Follow Patterns

Struggling to follow patterns is a sign

Not all sewing patterns are created equal and while there are great written tutorials on how to read a sewing pattern <– that’s my contribution! – it is always faster to learn how to use a sewing pattern from someone who makes them and uses them on a regular basis.

My Learn to Sew course has a full module on working with sewing patterns, from the basics like printing them through to choosing a size, pattern placement and cutting and marking up too.

Honestly, you’ll never struggle with a sewing pattern again!

4. You’ve Ruined Fabric

You ruined your favorite fabric

Sewing fabric without the right know how can be an expensive mistake to make. And the number of sewing beginners I’ve hard from who bought a fabric they loved and then hated what they sewed from it…

Learning about fabric types, and how to sew them is something every sewing beginner should make some time for, but often it’s only when you take a sewing class that you actively learn about fabrics.

This is what I have a full module on fabrics, covering woven, knits and non-grain materials as well as what needles to use and how to get the best results sewing them.

Once you’ve worked through Module 3: Fabric Confidence you’ll rarely make such an expensive mistake again.

5. You Can’t Get The Answers You Need From Google, Chat or Even Your Cat

Even your cat is not teaching you to sew fast enough

We’ve all been there – typing in a question to Google (or ChatGPT) hoping to get the answer to a sewing question in a hurry… and often times, there’s nothing relevant, or it just doesn’t make sense.

Taking a sewing course gives you access to a professional who you can put those questions to.

While most online sewing courses do not provide immediate feedback from the sewing teacher, I have provided a personal support email address to my students inside the course, as well as a dedicated Facebook group for Learn to Sew students who want to get feedback from me and their fellow students.

You’ll never be left with unanswered questions to any of the sewing questions that come up during your time in Learn to Sew.

If you think a sewing course is what you need, then take a look at my online sewing course. As well as being able to get support from me, you’ll also have access to a full library of sewing resources perfect for sewing beginners, and for a one time fee.
