8 Projects For My Winter Sewing Plans

It’s almost December, which means it’s time for me (and you?) to be making some winter sewing plans!

I’m going to admit that there may be a non-sewing project included in this post, but since you’re here …

A Little Lacey Shoulder Thing

A shrug? A shoulder thing? I’m going to use a bodice block I drafted to create one of these, using the scraps of lilac lacey fabric I have left over from my Graduate Fashion Week stash – yes, that is how long this fabric has been gathering dust!

The drawing on the left is what I’m ‘aiming’ for, and the fabric I’m going to be using is on the right.

I have no real reason for wanting to make this project, other than the fabric is calling to be used, and there isn’t much of it. I’m thinking it might work as a little bed shrug to keep the shoulders a tad warmer on cold winter mornings when a dressing gown is too much? We shall see…

A Figure Hugging Wrap Top

This one has been in ‘sampling’ for about 3 months now, and I think the pattern is perfect. Which means I’m going to be making it up (again) in a knit fabric from my stash and perhaps again in stretchy sequins in time for the holidays too.

As this is my own pattern design, there isn’t a pattern for you to use yet, but here are the two fabrics below to whet your appetite!

A Moto Jacket

This project is for another project, which I need to resew (I did not like the leather version) and as it will be a great layering piece I will be bumping this to the top of the winter sewing plans list!

I’m going for a slightly 80’s look and will be using a thick upholstery fabric I picked up from Shepherds bush about 8 years ago. What do you think?

A Sweater Of Sorts

I have very few warm layers to keep me cozy in the winter months, so while I am planning on crocheting or knitting something (I have so much yarn to use) I also think it’ll be sensible to sew something up too using a sweater fabric I picked up locally.

The fabric is not *quite* my style, but I think it’ll be ok for wearing while working. I plan to self draft because it would make a good project process for my Creative Dressmaking membership too.

The Denim Corset

I mentioned this project at the end of my post covering the first wedding corset toile. My plan is to use all the denim from my DIY jeans (which were over 5 years old and have now been cut up) to make a really amazing textural denim corset for myself.

I love using fabric manipulation techniques to create interesting fabrics, so a corset in denim will be a fun creative project!

The denim jeans I made myself in 2020 will be repurposed for a fun corset that I can wear.

A Barrel Leg Pant

The other project I need to start (and finish) sooner rather than later is a pair of barrel leg pants. Originally I was going to make a pair in the summer, and maybe create a pattern for you of them. But I feel like I’m missing out because of the time pattern development takes, so I’m just going to use my existing trouser block to get myself a pair made up.

I have two thoughts on fabric choice – either the mid weight denim I used for the jeans I made last year or the slightly more structured brown linen I got last December. I am leaning more towards the linen…

A dark brown linen will be great for a pair of Ninni culottes!

I’ll see if my Creative Dressmaking members are interested in this as a project and if not, I’ll do a tutorial here on the blog instead.

A New Shirt or Two

Another thing I noticed was how few long sleeved shirts I have. Especially ones suitable for winter layering.

I have the Jude shirt pattern I made years ago (which I still need to finalise and get up on the shop) which is a great fit for me… and I can use that as a base for my December project inside Creative Dressmaking.

The problem is fabric. While I have a ridiculous number of buttons, I think I’m running very low on fabrics suitable for button up shirts…

Baby Bits

I also have a few baby patterns in development too, which I’ll be sewing up this winter in ‘bigger’ sizes for my great niece. She will be turning one in February so I’m hoping to have them ready to take back in January for her.

I’m going to hold off on sharing what they are for now, because I know her mum reads my blog posts! 😉 But if you’re looking for an easy sewing project for a new mum, I have my free baby onesie sewing pattern that you could sew up in no time!

Well, that’s all I can think of right now for my winter sewing plans. I’m sure there’ll be more inspiration or need during the winter months, but I’ll report back in late February with photos of what I did and didn’t get done!

And let me know if you’d like to see this post as an inspo video on my YouTube channel too!
